The Best Time to Schedule Maternity Photos

When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos

If you’ve found yourself wondering when to schedule your maternity session, you’re in the right place. It’s one of the first questions that comes up once the excitement settles in and you start thinking about how you want to remember this moment.

The short answer is this: most maternity sessions are best scheduled between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

Around this time, your baby bump has a beautiful, defined shape that photographs effortlessly. It’s round, present, and unmistakable. At the same time, you’re still comfortable enough to move, shift, sit, stand, and truly enjoy the experience. You’re not counting down the minutes or trying to push through discomfort. You’re able to be present.

But the real answer is a little more personal than that.

Maternity photographs can be created any time and how this season felt as you and connect and bond with the life you’re growing.

Why Most Maternity Photos occur are 28–34 Weeks

If you’ve been searching for the best time to take maternity photos, this window exists for a reason.

Between 28 and 34 weeks:

  • Your bump is fully visible and photographs beautifully

  • Your body still feels mobile and comfortable

  • You have the energy to enjoy a full maternity photography session

  • You’re not yet in the final stretch of pregnancy discomfort

Now, could you schedule earlier? Of course. But depending on your body, your bump may not be as prominent and this is as equally beautiful.

Could you wait until later?  Of course, however, many women find those final weeks come with more fatigue, swelling, and overall discomfort, which can take away from the experience and how you feel during your session.

This is why that 28 to 34 week window is often considered the ideal time for maternity photos. It’s the balance point between beauty and comfort.

Every Pregnancy is Different (And That Matters)

That said, every pregnancy is different.

Some women carry smaller and may want to wait a bit longer for a more defined bump. Others are already showing beautifully at 26 weeks and feel ready earlier. If this is your second or third pregnancy, you may show sooner and prefer an earlier session.

The “right” time is always a blend of professional guidance and your own intuition.

As a Houston maternity photographer, I always encourage my clients to think about how they feel in their body, not just what week they’re in. When you feel confident, comfortable, and connected to your pregnancy, that’s when the magic happens.

When to Book Your Maternity Session

Timing your session is one thing. Booking it is another.

One thing I always recommend is reaching out during your second trimester to get your session on the calendar. Many photographers, especially those offering luxury or natural light studio maternity photography, book out weeks or even months in advance.

Booking early gives you:

  • More flexibility with your preferred dates

  • Time to plan wardrobe and styling

  • The ability to design a session that feels intentional and elevated

  • Access to your photographer’s full creative process

Because this isn’t just another photoshoot. This is part of a much bigger story.
